Understanding Ultrasound: Safe and Effective Imaging?
An ultrasound scan, also known as sonography, is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture detailed images of the body. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a safe choice for various medical assessments, including pregnancy monitoring, abdominal scans, and soft tissue evaluations.

During the ultrasound, a clear gel will be applied to the area of your body being examined. This helps the transducer (a handheld device) glide smoothly over your skin and improve the quality of the images. The procedure is typically painless and takes about 10 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of scan.
-
After your ultrasound, the images will be reviewed by one of our expert radiologists, and a detailed report will be sent to your referring physician. In most cases, your doctor will discuss the results with you during your follow-up appointment.

Scan preparation Instructions
-
Fasting Required: Do not eat or drink for 6-8 hours before the scan. This helps reduce the amount of gas in the intestines, improving image clarity.
Medications: Take your regular medications with a small sip of water, if necessary.
Avoid Smoking: Do not smoke for 6 hours before your scan as it can introduce air into your stomach, affecting the quality of the images.
-
Full Bladder Required:
Drink 1 litre (about 4 cups) of water 1 hour before your appointment. Do not empty your bladder until after the scan is complete.
This is essential for a clear view of your pelvic organs, particularly the bladder, uterus, and ovaries.
-
Full Bladder Required:
Drink 3-4 glasses of water 1 hour before your scan and avoid urinating.
This will help to visualize the bladder and kidneys properly.
Fasting: Some renal ultrasounds require fasting for 4-6 hours beforehand. Confirm with your clinic before your appointment.
-
No Preparation Needed: For most vascular ultrasounds (including varicose veins, post-surgical, and arteriovenous fistulas), no special preparation is required.
Clothing: Avoid tight clothing, especially around the area being scanned. You may be required to change into a gown for this scan.
Please note that any leg artery or venous study (including DVT or varicose veins) does involve removing most clothing on the lower half of your body. This allows for a thorough assessment of the lower limb vessels.
-
Early Pregnancy:
Drink 3-4 glasses of water 1 hour before the scan and do not empty your bladder.
This helps improve image quality during the early stages of pregnancy.
After 12 weeks Pregnancy:
Drink 2-3 glasses of water 1 hour before the scan and do not empty your bladder.
This helps to visualise some important structure at the beginning of your scan - but don't stress! These images will be taken first and quickly! You will be able to empty your bladder soon after to be more comfortable for the rest of the scan.
-
No Preparation Required:
There are no specific preparation instructions for a thyroid ultrasound. Simply arrive on time and wear comfortable clothing. We do require access to your neck so try to avoid high/turtle neck items of clothing.
-
No Preparation Required:
There is no need for special preparation. You will be required to change into a gown, so it is advised you wear comfortable clothing.
-
No Preparation Needed: No fasting or hydration is required for musculoskeletal scans (e.g., tendons, muscles, joints).
Clothing: Wear loose clothing or shorts, depending on the area being examined.
-
